Power born in a basement, proven worldwide.

Onan was founded by David Onan, a mechanical genius and humanitarian whose skill with machinery built the company that bears his name. He broke into the automotive world at a distributor of Rambler motor cars, then moved to a wholesaler of motor accessories where he convinced the owner to start a department repairing the electrical parts of cars, a department he ran himself. Within ten years he was supervising fifty mechanics he had trained, turning out well over a hundred repairs a day.

From Basement to Business

Facing a shortage of the tools mechanics needed, Onan began making his own in his basement during his free time, then marketed them by mail to mechanics across the country, to encouraging response. He worked nights and weekends to fill orders, hired the best mechanics he had trained, and brought on his first full-time employee in 1920. As demand grew, he rented a building, then moved to larger premises in 1922, and the Onan Corporation steadily took shape.

Through Acquisition and Growth

After years of hard work and many ups and downs, the Onan Corporation was sold to Studebaker-Packard in 1960, an investment that fuelled further growth. Through subsequent ownership changes, the company eventually became part of Cummins Inc., gaining the scale and global reach of one of the world's leading power businesses while keeping the engineering reputation Onan had earned.

Today, as part of Cummins, Onan provides a wide range of engines, generators, and power systems, from portable and industrial generators to diesel engines and small construction equipment. Its products power hospitals, yachts, data centres, vehicles, and far more, supported across the globe through Cummins' extensive network of distributors, dealers, and service centres.
