Perkins began when Frank Perkins set out to build a diesel engine small enough to fit commercial cars and light vans, certain there would be strong demand because no one else had made one. He partnered with the gifted engineer Charles Chapman, and from a two-room ground-floor office in Peterborough, with just three other employees, they built the Vixen, the world's first high-speed four-cylinder diesel engine. Within four years the young company was producing around 556 engines a year.

Winning Over the Market

In the early days Frank chased customers across the fast-growing motor industry. He fitted his engine into a Hillman car that cruised at 50 mph, an immediate success, then adapted it for a Commer truck. Working with Commer's managing director to meet the truck's power needs, he created the modified Wolf engine, accepted onto the Commer production line and exhibited in 1933. As diesel proved far cheaper to run than petrol, demand surged, and the engine even drew interest for marine and Royal Navy use.

Perkins' history is studded with landmark engines: the P6 series, including the P6354 that stayed in production for thirty years; the ultra-compact 400 series in the 10.2–50 kW range; and the fuel-efficient yet powerful 1200 series delivering 61.5–240 kW. The company's engineering pedigree was underlined in 1953 when Perkins set six world land-speed records, proving its diesels could combine efficiency with serious power.
