The compact diesel pioneers.

Yanmar was founded by Magokichi Yamaoka, the ninth of ten children, born in the village of Minami Tominaga in Shiga, Japan. Leaving the family farm at sixteen to make more of his life, he worked a string of jobs in the city before becoming a gas plumber in 1905. Installing gas engines taught him their structure and principles, and in 1912 he founded a workshop to repair and rebuild gas engines, the true beginning of Yanmar.

Oil Engines and a New Direction

After the upheavals of the First World War and the recession that followed, Magokichi reinvented his business. Reconnecting with an old colleague, he set out to build oil engines that were durable yet light, his prototype weighing just 110 kg and far smaller than rivals. By 1921 he had released a 3-horsepower oil engine, and Yanmar as an engine maker was truly born, soon branching into agricultural equipment that made farmers' work far more productive.

The World's First Compact Diesel

At a 1932 trade show in Germany, Magokichi discovered diesel engines and was captivated by their durability, safety, and cost-effectiveness. He wanted to fit them to his agricultural machines but could find none small enough, so he set out to build his own. After repeated failures, his engineers, by then obsessed with cracking the problem, persisted, and in 1933 they created the world's first compact diesel engine, scaling production from 100 units a month toward tens of thousands a year.

Global Recognition and a Sustainable Future

After the Second World War, Yanmar moved production to the countryside and continued building compact diesel engines for agriculture, construction, power generation, fisheries, and more. The company expanded abroad and earned the German Inventors Association's Diesel Gold Medal in 1955, with its K1 engine displayed beside the first-generation diesel in a German museum. Today Yanmar keeps developing advanced technologies across every industry it serves, working toward a more sustainable future.
